What causes wrinkles?

There are two basic types of wrinkles: Those that occur as a result of repeated facial movement, called dynamic wrinkles, and those that occur as a result of skin laxity due to aging, called static wrinkles. Static wrinkles can also occur as a result of environmental factors like pollution and sun exposure, as well as stress or disease. 

How are dynamic wrinkles treated?

The primary treatment for dynamic wrinkles today involves the use of neuromuscular agents like Botox to block the transmission of nerve messages from the facial muscles to the brain, preventing muscle motions that can cause creasing. However, many people respond very well to laser treatments, microdermabrasion and chemical peels, all of which can soften wrinkles so they appear less pronounced.

How are static wrinkles treated?

Static wrinkles respond best to laser treatments, chemical peels and microdermabrasion treatments, all of which can remove the dead layers of skin, soften the edges of lines and wrinkles, and promote the development of collagen and elastin, both of which play critical roles in skin's appearance and texture, helping skin feel and look firmer, plumper and more resilient. As a result, these wrinkle removal treatments work in two ways: First, by lessening the appearance of wrinkles or eliminating fine lines and wrinkles entirely, and second, by promoting collagen and elastin development over time for long-lasting results.
