What is a picosecond laser?

Picosecond lasers use super-fast pulses of laser energy to treat an array of cosmetic issues. One of the primary advantages of a picosecond laser like the PicoSure® laser is that because each pulse is so fast, the risk of heat damage to neighboring tissue is minimal compared to many other types of lasers that use slower bursts of energy. That allows treatments to be more precise and more comfortable for the patient, and it also means patients usually need fewer treatments.

What can the PicoSure® laser treat?

The PicoSure® laser is ideal for tattoo removal and has proven to be much more effective than other types of lasers, typically requiring fewer sessions to achieve optimal results. Dr. Westfried also uses the PicoSure® laser to treat melasma, acne scars, wrinkles and other cosmetic issues to help patients feel more confident about their appearance.

How does the PicoSure® laser work to remove tattoos?

Unlike other types of lasers that rely at least partially on photothermal action (heating the tissue) to break up pigments, the PicoSure® laser uses pressurewave technology to create a photomechanical reaction that breaks apart pigments into tiny fragments that can be removed more easily and more quickly by the body's natural waste removal processes. Because the resulting fragments are so much tinier with the PicoSure® laser and can be removed so much more efficiently by the body, patients require fewer sessions to get the results they want, and results tend to be better compared to traditional laser systems used in tattoo removal.

What is recovery like?

Because there is less heat damage associated with the PicoSure® laser, patients experience much faster and less painful recovery after tattoo removal and treatments for acne scars, wrinkling or pigmented lesions – typically a very brief period of redness that resolves soon after treatment.
